Three Ways To Ensure Your HVAC System Is Ready For Winter

Posted on: 17 November 2020

As the temperatures start to drop, you will want to make certain that your heating system is ready to keep you, your family, and your home comfortable and warm. You don't want to wake up in the middle of the night to a freezing home because your heating system decided to quit on you. By taking the necessary steps to maintain your heating system, unexpected breakdowns are much less likely. You also won't have to worry about unexplainable increases in your energy bills. Keep reading to learn three maintenance tasks that you should perform on your residential heating system before the weather gets too bad.

Clean or Replace Your HVAC Filters

The filter in your HVAC system has a very big job. It is responsible for ensuring that the air in your home is clean when it moves out of the HVAC system and into your home for you to breathe. In addition, the filter helps to extend the system's overall life. If the filter is dirty and clogged, then you will be suffering from inadequate air quality. Ideally, you should check your air filter each month and replace it at a minimum of every three months, sometimes sooner.

Check the Airflow

Take a quick walk around your house and ensure that the vents and registers throughout the house are clear and clean. They should not need to be blocked by any drapes, rugs, or furniture. You also need to ensure that they are all open. Taking these steps will ensure that you are receiving the most efficient airflow throughout your home and that your HVAC system is not working harder than necessary.

Schedule a Preventative Maintenance Appointment

Can you remember the last time that an HVAC technician came out and performed a thorough inspection of your HVAC system? If you can't, then it is definitely time to get an appointment marked on your calendar. Preventative maintenance ensures that your system continues to perform optimally. Ultimately, these appointments should be made once per year. A technician will come to check the system out, clean your filters, conduct an energy efficiency test, and determine if there are any issues that could become much larger ones later on.

The aforementioned tasks are a good start to preparing your HVAC system for the colder months ahead. To learn other tasks that you should perform and/or to schedule your preventative maintenance appointment, contact a residential heating service in your area.

Summer is Upon Us – Is Your AC Working?

Hi. My name is Laurie Waters. The HVAC contractor was just out at our house last week and did I ever get a lesson from him. You see, we had a warm spell hit and I went to turn our air conditioning on for the first time since last summer. Much to my dismay, it wasn’t working. All I got was a blast of warm air. The fan was bringing the outdoor heat inside. Thank goodness it wasn’t anything major. My unit needed Freon. While he was here, the contractor taught me how to do some routine maintenance around my unit, vents, and filters. I’m going to share this information with you. I hope you find it to be useful.
