Common AC Problems and How to Fix Them: A Homeowner's Guide

Posted on: 29 October 2024

As temperatures soar, a reliable air conditioning system becomes a sanctuary from the heat. However, like any other home appliance, AC units can develop issues. Understanding these common problems and knowing how to address them can help you maintain comfort and efficiency in your home.

Inadequate Cooling

One of the most frequent complaints is that the AC isn't cooling effectively. This issue can stem from several factors. Start by checking the thermostat settings to ensure it's on the correct mode and set at the desired temperature. If the settings are correct, inspect the air filter. A clogged filter can restrict airflow, leading to insufficient cooling. Replace or clean the filter regularly to maintain optimal performance.

If the problem persists, consider checking the outdoor unit. Ensure it's free of debris and that the condenser coils are clean. Use a garden hose to gently clean the coils if necessary. If these steps don't resolve the issue, it might be time to consult a professional technician to examine the refrigerant levels or the compressor.

Strange Noises

Unusual noises emanating from your AC unit can be alarming. Rattling or banging noises could indicate loose parts or debris in the system. Turn off the unit and inspect it for any visible signs of damage or obstruction. Tighten any loose screws or components carefully.

If you hear a hissing noise, it might be a refrigerant leak, which requires professional attention. Refrigerant leaks not only affect cooling efficiency but can also be harmful to the environment. In such cases, contacting a certified technician is essential.

Water Leaks

Water leaks around the AC unit can signal a blocked drain tube or a problem with the condensate pump. Start by turning off the unit and locating the drain line. Use a wet/dry vacuum to clear any blockages. If the leak continues, there might be an issue with the condensate pump, which typically requires professional repair or replacement.

Preventative Maintenance Tips

To sidestep these common issues, regular maintenance is key. Here are some tips to keep your AC system running smoothly:

  1. Schedule Regular Inspections: Have a professional inspect your unit annually. This can help identify potential issues before they become major problems.
  2. Clean or Replace Filters: Depending on your usage, clean or replace the air filters every few months. This simple step enhances airflow and improves efficiency.
  3. Clear Debris: Regularly check the outdoor unit for leaves, dirt, and other debris. Keep the area around the unit clear to ensure proper airflow.
  4. Monitor Thermostat Settings: Use a programmable thermostat to optimize cooling schedules and reduce unnecessary strain on your system.
  5. Check for Leaks: Periodically inspect the condensate drain and pan for clogs or leaks. Ensuring these components are functioning can prevent water damage and mold growth.

Summer is Upon Us – Is Your AC Working?

Hi. My name is Laurie Waters. The HVAC contractor was just out at our house last week and did I ever get a lesson from him. You see, we had a warm spell hit and I went to turn our air conditioning on for the first time since last summer. Much to my dismay, it wasn’t working. All I got was a blast of warm air. The fan was bringing the outdoor heat inside. Thank goodness it wasn’t anything major. My unit needed Freon. While he was here, the contractor taught me how to do some routine maintenance around my unit, vents, and filters. I’m going to share this information with you. I hope you find it to be useful.
