Easy Fixes You Can Make Before Calling An AC Repair Technician

Posted on: 8 September 2020

You might notice that your AC unit is not cooling properly, but you might also be reluctant to hire an air conditioning repair technician. The last thing you'd want is to contact an AC technician when your unit is simply not turned on or there is another simple answer to your question. There are several common issues you should look for before you hire an AC repair technician.

Make Sure a Filter Is in Place

One of the most basic ways to fix your AC unit is to make sure that the filter is where it belongs and is cleaned regularly. If your filter becomes dirty, the AC unit must work harder to circulate air through your home and may stop cooling your home entirely. Also, make sure that several registers are not closed.

If your filter needed to be cleaned or several registers were closed, the evaporator coil might have also iced up. Turn off cooling for your AC and switch the fan from "auto" to "on." Allow the fan to run for an hour. Then, turn the cooling back on to see if the AC is still working.

Find Out Why the Compressor Is Overheating and Shutting Down

If you are experiencing periodic moments of minimal cooling or no cooling, your compressor might be overheating and shutting down. This is often because the condenser coils are clogged and need to be cleaned. Clean the coils even if you believe they are already clean and then test your AC to determine if you have fixed the problem.

Hire an AC Repair Technician

If you have checked these issues and your AC is still not functioning properly, contact an AC repair technician. You may be able to fix the AC unit or you may be given a recommendation for a replacement AC.

There are several problems that are warning signs that you need AC repairs:

  • Your AC is very loud
  • You're experiencing very high electrical bills
  • Your AC feels like it is not cooling your home
  • The AC is running constantly
  • The AC is only blowing air
  • The AC is not running at all

A licensed AC repair technician who has a physical location in your area will often be the best choice when hiring someone to repair your AC. Look for an air conditioning repair contractor that has been in business for many years and has a reputation for excellent customer service

Summer is Upon Us – Is Your AC Working?

Hi. My name is Laurie Waters. The HVAC contractor was just out at our house last week and did I ever get a lesson from him. You see, we had a warm spell hit and I went to turn our air conditioning on for the first time since last summer. Much to my dismay, it wasn’t working. All I got was a blast of warm air. The fan was bringing the outdoor heat inside. Thank goodness it wasn’t anything major. My unit needed Freon. While he was here, the contractor taught me how to do some routine maintenance around my unit, vents, and filters. I’m going to share this information with you. I hope you find it to be useful.
