4 Ways To Make It Cooler Upstairs

Posted on: 19 April 2017

When you turn on the air conditioning in your home, you probably notice that the downstairs floor of your home stays significantly cooler than the upstairs. This makes sleeping at night not as comfortable as it should be if your bedrooms are located upstairs. The reason this happens is because hot air travels upwards, which it will do in your home when being pushed out by the cool air coming from your AC. For this reason, you will want to consider these four ways to help make it cooler upstairs:

  1. Adjust the Vents Downstairs: It's not wise to close any vents in your home because this makes your AC work harder than it should since it's trying to cool the entire home. However, if you partially close some of the vents downstairs, it's going to help push more air upstairs making the top floor of your home become cooler more quickly. This way, you have a more even temperature in your entire home.
  2. Use the Ceiling Fans: Using the ceiling fans upstairs can help significantly because it is going to push the warm air back down. Although it's not recommended to turn on ceiling fans in rooms that you are not using, it's okay for upstairs rooms when you are using them to push the warm air back down.
  3. Use LED Lighting: LED lighting is not going to warm up your home like other lighting would. This can significantly improve the coolness of your upstairs floor in your home. Don't just install this type of lighting upstairs, however. This lighting should also be used downstairs in order to prevent unnecessary heat build up in your home. If unnecessary heat build up happens, all that warm air is going to continue pushing it's way up.
  4. Turn the AC Fan On: Instead of having your AC on auto, you should turn the AC fan on. The reason for this is that the fan is going to move air through your home more forcefully. This way, the cool air is getting to the top floor before the hot air has time to accumulate upstairs.

When you know these four ways to make it cooler on your upstairs floor, you can be sure that you make your home that much more comfortable. This is also going to ensure that your AC is working as efficiently as possible to cool your entire home instead of just the one floor. Summer is Upon Us – Is Your AC Working?

Hi. My name is Laurie Waters. The HVAC contractor was just out at our house last week and did I ever get a lesson from him. You see, we had a warm spell hit and I went to turn our air conditioning on for the first time since last summer. Much to my dismay, it wasn’t working. All I got was a blast of warm air. The fan was bringing the outdoor heat inside. Thank goodness it wasn’t anything major. My unit needed Freon. While he was here, the contractor taught me how to do some routine maintenance around my unit, vents, and filters. I’m going to share this information with you. I hope you find it to be useful.
