Residential Air Conditioning Repairs: Understanding Your AC And What Can Go Wrong

Posted on: 17 August 2021

Air conditioning is a necessity for those who live in hot areas where an AC makes the summers more bearable. But there are times when home air conditioning units do not work as they should, which can be really frustrating for many people. In other cases, the systems are outdated, and it makes more sense to have them replaced. If you notice signs of problems with your AC system, read more about the simple steps to help you repair them.

The Basic Functions of Residential AC

You first need to understand how air conditioning works to know when repairs might be needed. Most residential systems are either condensing units or heat pumps. The first type of system uses compressed refrigerant gas to cool the coils, which then provide a thermal exchange as air blows over them and through the ducts. An AC heat pump works in a similar way—it uses a heat exchange design to remove heat from your home. The difference with a heat pump is that it can also provide heating in winter.

Problems That Cause AC Failures

There are various issues that can cause failures with your AC. Usually, they start with maintenance being neglected, which leads to damage. These problems might be due to neglected damage that goes unrepaired or due to a dirty AC. Therefore, it is important to have your system serviced to avoid these issues. There are also issues like an AC capacitor failing or problems with ice that damage coils and compressors. These issues need to be repaired before they cause expensive damage to your air conditioner.

Dealing with an AC Failure During a Heatwave

There are also AC failures that are going to need to be dealt with during summer heatwaves. These issues often arise due to the stress of the system running constantly. You might want to do a few things to help prevent the problems with AC failures during a heatwave, such as repairing minor issues, cleaning the unit, and making sure the air filter is clean. You can also turn the thermostat up just a little to help relieve the stress on your air conditioner during extremely hot weather.

Preventing the AC Failures

The problems with AC failures often start with the lack of maintenance, wear, and old equipment. Therefore, there are repairs that you can have done to your AC to help prevent these issues. An AC repair service can help with upgrades and repairs that need to be done to reduce stress on your system, improve its efficiency and prevent failures.

Summer is Upon Us – Is Your AC Working?

Hi. My name is Laurie Waters. The HVAC contractor was just out at our house last week and did I ever get a lesson from him. You see, we had a warm spell hit and I went to turn our air conditioning on for the first time since last summer. Much to my dismay, it wasn’t working. All I got was a blast of warm air. The fan was bringing the outdoor heat inside. Thank goodness it wasn’t anything major. My unit needed Freon. While he was here, the contractor taught me how to do some routine maintenance around my unit, vents, and filters. I’m going to share this information with you. I hope you find it to be useful.
